Chapter 6 – Lines in the Library

As the spring semester of her junior year started to draw to a close, Lauren Delaney found herself spending more and more of her time behind a research desk at the university’s student library. While the laptop she’d bought the year before was more than up to the task of writing papers and preparing presentations for group projects, she found that she just focused better when she was fully immersed in the subdued ambience of the underground archives in the middle of campus, away from the temptation to “multitask” while working that typically took the form of binging episodes of The Simpsons on Netflix in the background. Whenever she had a major assignment to work on, she’d sequester herself away behind one of the many public computers in the main study area for two or three hours at a time and dedicate herself entirely to the subject at hand. It was a good system for her, and ever since she’d fully embraced it there’d been a noticeable upswing in her grades, and ironically she’d also found herself with a lot more free time to spend with Cassidy since she was able to focus to the point of radically increasing her productivity.

At least, that was how things usually went.

One particular afternoon Cassidy had decided to tag along with her after she’d finished her classes for the day, but unfortunately for the both of them, the serene atmosphere of the library didn’t seem to have quite the same calming effect on her as it did for Lauren. In fact, it had quite the opposite, magnifying her boredom tenfold as she bounced her attention restlessly from the study guide she’d printed out for her physics final, to her phone where she’d play a few rounds of the one puzzle game she had downloaded that didn’t require an active internet connection to work (reception was terrible in the building), to sporadically looking for something interesting to occupy her mind on the highly-restrictive web browser her workstation had installed on it. None of it was able to hold her focus for long however, and as the minutes ticked by at a maddeningly slow crawl, she found herself squirming in her chair and looking for excuses to bug Lauren if for no other reason than to just have something to do.

“Do you think they keep it so cold in here because it helps preserve the books, or is it just because we’re underground and it’s naturally cold?”

Heaving out an annoyed sigh, Lauren turned away from the monitor of her workstation and fixed the girl next to her with a disapproving scowl.

“Do I need to spank you, Cassie?”

“Oh my god, shhh!”

Cassidy’s face had predictably flushed a positively adorable shade of hot pink as she’d scrambled to hush the other girl up with a frantic waving motion. She swallowed her embarrassment and cast a nervous glance to either side behind her, trying to see if anybody had overheard what she’d just been asked.
